I have a dog. Two years ago it would sounded unbelievable. At those time I was afraid of dogs, therefore, I did know absolutely nothing how people keep this kind of pets. Anyway, I had a hint that it should include a training. Maybe there are a lot of people who know dog's behaviour at professional degree and they haven't problems with dog's training, but people like me exist, who was surprised when they knew puppies aren't so clever as kitties, they even don't know where their toilet is or haven't ability to control it. I mean, there were a lot of surprises for me in the process of caring for my dog.
I think the most people know how should behave a clever, trained dog. Commonly these dogs know commands like "sit', "lay", "come here", and so on. They should do every owner's command and shouldn't be aggressive or barking without special one. Everybody knows the dog training process includes the dog's favourite food and teaching what every command is, but everything else in the process is not well understood.
Not long before I saw a video on ted.com website about dog-friendly dog training. In the video a broadcaster, Ian Dunbar, told us in a funny form about different ideas which people can't realise themselves. First of all, he mentioned, human rarely described what they want from dogs, we keeps the rules a secret from the dog, we can punish the dog for breaking rules he didn't even know existed. Therefore, at the beginning of training we should give a chance to our dog to realise what the command means, and what the dog should do to please us..
The second problem is that we try to force a dog what he don't want to do. We don't take the dog's point of view into account. In this conditions we compete with a lot of distractions such as other dogs, squirrels, in a word, environment, the chance that we will lose is high. Our win strategy is the Premack principle, it means we follow a low-frequency behaviour - one the dog doesn't want to do - by a high-frequency behaviour, commonly known as a behaviour problem or a dog hobby - something the dog does like to do. In this occasion previous distractions work as encouragements. In essence, told us Ian at the video, we're teaching the dog, kind of like - we're letting the dog think that the dog is training us.
The third thing of Ian's speech was a punishment. It not necessarily should include a physical violence. For example, it would be unbelievable if in the dangerous animal training was included
a physical violence. A lack of encouragement is already a punishment. At starting we can use the food lure, of course. The biggest advice to avoid unpleasant actions is to make them impossible. For instance, if there aren't plants in the room, puppy won't eat them or break a pot. And then if a dog don't do something in a childhood, he likely won't do it in adolescence.
The last thing what Ian mentioned was a human incoherence - we take the good for granted and we moan and groan at the bad. Realization of this fact can help in other relationships, such as marriage and children rising. Ian believed, this knowledge should studied at schools, this can save families!
A good trained dog demands a defined skills from his owners, this fact was described in the "Bad dog (A love story)" book which was written by Martin Kihn. I've read this book in Russian and it impressed me a lot. The main character refused from alcohol to train his 5 years old Bernese mountain dog, Hola. It sounds easy, but in the tail I saw all the tests which were prepared for this brave man. I think I became be better when my dog appeared, the smallest I stopped be afraid of dogs.
A dog without training is a dangerous creature, they are always on a leash, they bark on everything and absolutely don't do what their owners want. This disobedience isn't a big problem when we talk about small breeds, otherwise people may suffer. In my opinion, the government should control a big dogs and their owners, like it done in Germany.
There are a lot of education books, websites which teach readers to train their dogs. Nevertheless, the most important thing is training puppies. Half the battle is the knowledge how to please the dog. I suppose, this may be explained to everybody at the puppy-school but I only read about them in the American book, I didn't see anyone in Russia. By the way, I with my dog went to the dog-training lesson once or twice, it was very helpful, but we were ought to go far by public transport and we could afford these lessons due to the teacher was our friend, otherwise the cost will be too high. I believe, every year people are more and more interested in the process of the dog training.
yep, only now I start to read a paper at the wiki
